Secure Mat Housing is a conceptual reimagination of mat-buildings into a secure housing. Mat-buildings are marked by their flatness, density, and repeatability. The three bedroom unit comprising Secure Mat Housing can be continuously repeated to form a larger complex.

Each unit is meticulously oriented in order to grant private access, private courtyards, and windows that never face each other to heighten security.
The unit plan is marked by a continuous corridor that runs through the entire house with detached access to each rooms within.

CEILING HEIGHT EFFECT

The ceiling height is varied based on program within each unit. The more public spaces like living rooms and kitchens have higher ceiling heights to provide a sense of openness. On the other hand, more intimate spaces like bedrooms get lower ceiling heights to provide a sense of privacy and security.

PRECEDENT STUDY  |  FREDENSBORG HOUSE

The housing takes precedence of the Fredensborg House by Jorn Utzon in Denmark. Each house has its own private courtyard, with direct access into a public courtyard,  allowing users to navigate through different levels of privacy.

STEP DOWN EFFECT

The programs create hierarchy from the most private into the most public, resulting with a step-down effect as represented below.
