COOLING ARTIFACT

Cooling Artifact combines the industrial functionality of Hyperbolic Cooling Towers and the domestic banality of Venetian Blinds to demonstrate comfort through light diffusion.

The artifact takes the common IKEA EKET cabinet and adds two layers of blind and steam mechanisms to demonstrate the filtration of sunlight in desert cities like Phoenix AZ at a domestic scale.

With the manueverability of blind angle and steam amount, the artifact offers maximum controllability for users when it comes to creating the best lighting condition indoors.

BOH / FOH

The artifact emulates the conventional building layout by concealing the “systems” at the BOH (the bottom cabinet), leaving the FOH (the top cabinet) pristine and open.

DIFFUSED LIGHTING

Venetian blinds can only direct light, casting shadows of
harsh contrast between light and dark. Once steam enters the
DGU (double glazed unit), the light diffuses, creating a soft glow
onto interior surfaces.
Diffused lighting and comfort:
  • Visual comfort by equal dissipation of light
  • Visual comfort by reducing harsh contrasts
  • Thermal comfort by filtering radiation
